You Haven't Quantified the Pain.

GTMB2B SalesSales Enablement

The #1 thing I say in AE 1:1s: "You haven't quantified the pain."

Because we're good at everything up to that point.

We identify the pain in early discovery. We map the use cases around it. We match our differentiators to it.

Then we stop. Right before the step that actually builds the deal.

We don't quantify it. What's it actually costing them? Most AEs don't dig there. Me included. And quantified pain is the foundation of the business case. Skip it and the business case is just vibes with a logo on it.

And the business case has never mattered more. In a contested-budget economy, you're not just beating your competitor — you're beating the security project, the migration, someone's pet AI initiative. The best business case wins. Vague pain loses that fight; a hard number wins it.

We don't quantify because it's a hard conversation. You're asking the buyer to go pull real cost, man-hours, headcount it touches — homework on their side, and buyers stall on it. So the rep doesn't push, and the pain stays named but never priced.

But that ask is also your best qualifier. A buyer who won't help you quantify won't get you funded either — and the worst loss in sales isn't to a competitor, it's the 6–9 month cycle that ends unfunded. Better to know in month one than month nine.

Here's what we changed.

AI can't invent a customer's internal numbers. What it does is read every call and pull the metrics the buyer let slip — "four people touch this," "10k orders a month" — draft a cost model out of their own words, and flag what's still missing so the rep knows what to chase. Then it builds the business case: branded, board-ready, something your champion can carry into the room you're not in.

So the rep walks in with a draft to react to, not homework to assign.

Identifying pain is discovery. Quantifying it is the business case. Most teams celebrate the first and skip the second.

Empathy doesn't get funded. Numbers do.
